you can't friend other players, but you can like there island and if your on there island you can ask theme for there friend code or give them your friend code to become friends on your switch and after you've done that you can enter your game and go into the friends app!
witch the app is on your nook phone and you can ask to friend people on animal crossing and if they accept than you can invite only your friends and communicate with them when there online without even having them on you island or being on theirs!
Go into switch menu select add a friend. Search people you've played with then send friend request. It then adds them to your nookphone if they accept.
Only best friends and communicate when both in game but best friends can Dig and axe when visiting so only best friend players you trust. :)
