If you dig up his communicator parts, or find his lost communicator (Gullivaar) then the next day you'll get a special item in the mail. Do this 30 times and you get the golden shovel diy

Some of the things he sends you are pretty cool. One time he gave me a sphinx statue. The pirate stuff Gullivarr sends are cool too. I got a pirate beard from him the other week.
